History

The Vocal Consort of Brussels is an international mixed chamber choir in Brussels, founded in 2005 by the German music director Eckhard Budrowitz (the former music director of the music school Schola Cantorum in Leipzig, Germany. (www.schola-cantorum.de) and Steven De Gieter (Director of The Vocal Consort of Brussels , Belgium). After some rehearsals during the first months - Ecki (Eckhard) and Steven were thinking at organising their first concert with a non-mixed choir (in the beginning there were only ladies) : Poulenc, Pekka Kostiainen (Finland), Brahms, Egil Hovland and Knut Nysted (Norway), Jon Nordal (Iceland), Arvo Pärt (Estonia),  Mendelssohn,  B. Britten, Anton Bruckner und Knüpfer (precursor of J.S. Bach) - but in the beginning we were particularly focussed on Scandinavian contemporary music (only sopranos and altos). Unfortunately cancer was discovered with Eckhard, and he had to give up the choir. Eckhard died on the 4th of January 2007) In meantime, Steven has worked further with other interim directors, who took over the choir for 2 years.  In that period, the choir did his debut appearance in the Eglise Sainte-Chapelle of Brussels (Marolles) on the 12th December 2005 : Three Shakespeare Songs, Edward Esch, Octavio Paz, Viivi Luik, William Blake...). In the spring of 2008 we performed also some masses in the Church of Sint-Catherine Lombeek and Sint-Pieters-Leeuw, some nice cosy, flemish villages in the Brussels surroundings with director Michel Duyck. (Mendelssohn, Bruckner and J.S. Bach). In January 2009 we worked with Ludo Claesen on a spring and summerconcert where we performed Paul Hindemith (Six Chansons and Johannes Brahms : Sieben Lieder). Since september 2009 we performed a Advent Concert with Louise Deal (Dallas, Heerlen) until now. For the next concert in june 2011: see page concerts for all information.

Concept

The purpose of the choir is, like already mentioned, to reach an number of 18 people (we did in meantime). The repertoire concentrates on contemporary choral music (20th and 21st century), with sometimes an exception, jumping to Baroc and Renaissance music. . We aim at organize 6 concerts per year (3 productions), in general 1 in spring, 1 summerconcert and 1 advent or Christmas concert per year. At the moment we are still looking for a deep bass voice and 1 deep alto, 1 tenor and 1 soprano (see page auditions for more information)
